Emmitt Smith said that in his August 7, 2010 Football Hall of Fame induction speech. You can read the speech here. I don't love football, but I do like the Dallas Cowboys - most seasons. I typically wouldn't hunt for legal marketing/management metaphors on a sports channel in the fall of any year. But I think the life lessons Emmitt learned on and off the field (and that he shared on Saturday) are simple, practical and can apply to what we as legal marketers do every day. Emmitt spoke of consistency. And balance.

Floral Dress

Don't add a new item to your wardrobe without eliminating another. The same goes for content on your intranet. It expires (just like the floral dress from two Springs ago), and drags down the rest of your site.

Conducting audits of several SharePoint intranets inspired me to design a list of much-needed intranet best practices for law firms, about which I blogged here. Now, being in the pre-design strategy and planning phases of two large firm intranets, I realize that I stopped short at 7. Two more best practices have surfaced (suggested by clients and CGS, a technology company) that are equally critical to usability and long-term success.
